Sometimes being green doesn't feel like the most frugal option. But when I found thredUP, I finally found a way to be frugal and green at the same time. An online consignment shop, thredUP offers an easy option for giving outgrown or forgotten clothes a new chance at life (at a bargain price to boot!).
While shopping at thredUP's online shop, I noticed that it was easy to navigate. I'm a person that tends to hit that little 'X' in the corner if I can't find my way around a webstore quickly. You can sort items by gender, category and style. You can even check a box to show only items that are new with tags (NWT). Offering sizes from 12 months to 20 (youth), thredUP's online store can offer afforable, brand name clothing to families trying to save a little green (in their wallet or their planet) for multiple ages.
How does it work? thredUP is similar to your local consignment or resale shop, only available 24/7/365. The staff at thredUP sort through clothes they receive through their mail-in program and offfer them in their online store. They choose only the best clothing and take detailed photos for shoppers to inspect prior to purchase. When I was shopping, I noticed that I was able to zoom in on all areas of the garments. Instead of the standard photograph, I could see anything I wanted; I could check the neck for stains and make sure there were no pinholes in the pants. It sure settled my mind about ordering from an online store I wasn't familiar with.
What did I get? I decided to let my boys choose their own clothes. My oldest decided on a pair of (bright) green cords, while my youngest settled on a long-sleeved t-shirt with a cool semi-truck. Both items were NWT and looked great in the photos online.
Pants from The Children's Place $7.99 ($14 MSRP)
Shirt from Osh Kosh $11.49 ($22 MSRP)
Since clothes are scrutinized, and only a number of well-known, name brands are accepted, thredUP is a great place to find popular, quality items. And if you're worried about getting a used shirt with holes or a missing tag, you can leave those worries behind because this company is dedicated to offering items in new or nearly new condition to their customers. And to them, nearly new means you probably can't tell it had a former owner.
And don't forget, shopping thredUP means supporting American business. thredUP is a small business, based in the startup capitol of the world. Staff is made of busy parents, technology lovers and eco friendly individuals.
Ready to get started? Go to thredUP's online store, Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest page and get to know them. When you're ready, start browsing their online isles, and if you're a new customer, be sure to use one of the links in this post for a $10 credit. Not only will you get $10 now, but you'll have a chance to earn $10 for every new customer you refer! And don't worry - you don't have to spend your money there. You can choose to cash out anytime.
thredUP gets their inventory from people that send in their once-loved or long forgotten about kids' clothing. A bag was included in my package so that I could mail some items in for a credit (or cash if I choose) and I'm looking forward to following up after I my bag is processed, so don 't forget to check back for the sequel to my review!

I got a cute pair of little girl leggings from them with a $10 credit. It's not worth the effort for me to save stuff to send to them though; by the time my son has outgrown something, it's normally mot in good condition anymore. He's definitely a boy!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I LOVE consignment shops but an online consignment shop sounds awesome! Off to check them out now. :)
